It allows you to take full control of their character (while losing vision and control of your own). Even though you don’t get their abilities for use it does allow for some mean things. For example, 2 years ago the main raid in Wrath of the Lich King was Naxxramas. The entrance to this instance was high up in the air and outside of the portal there was a small area with a summoning stone. What your local priest would do was camp out there and mind control poor enemy players and run them off the ledge to their inevitable death.

Physic Scream – This ability allows you to fear a certain number of players in your range. What this does is make them lose control of their character, causing them to run around in random directions for the duration of the fear.

Dispersion – This final talent in the shadow tree turns you in a blob of shadow energy. For 6 seconds you will regenerate mana while taking 90% reduced damage. This spell can always be used making it a great safety mechanic

Shadowform – This shadow talent morphs you into a shadow form. It gives your character a cool black glow (which your mount also takes on). It grants you 15% increased shadow damage done while reducing all damage taken by 15%. Furthermore it also allows your damage over time spells to critically hit. Unfortunately it does prevent most holy spells from being used.

Guardian Spirit – This talent can be cast on any player you are grouped with. It will increase the healing they take by 40% for 10 seconds, and the first hit they take that would’ve killed them instead heals them to 50%.

Lightwell – This holy talent allows you to place down a well which grouped players can click to gain a very strong heal over time.

Circle of Healing – This holy talent allows you to instantly heal a target and 5 targets within range of that target.

Spirit of Redemption – This holy talent turns you into the spirit of redemption whenever you die. This allows you to heal as much as you like for 15 seconds after death.

Body and Soul – This holy talent allows your power word: Shield to grant your target a 30% movement speed increase for 4 seconds.

Surge of Light – This holy talent gives your spell critical strikes a chance to make your next smite (nuke) or flash heal instant cast and cost no man while being unable to critically hit.

Penance- This awesome looking heal from the discipline talent tree is a channeled ability that will heal your target for massive amounts.

Reflective Shield – This funky PvP talent causes your shields to return a certain amount of the damage they absorb to your attacker. This is especially fun in duels against classes that can’t heal themselves.

Choosing a profession

Mining/Skinning – For those wanting some extra gold this is a solid choice, just like with any other class. You gather the resources and sell them on the auction house.

Tailoring/Enchanting- This combination gives you the ability to make your own armor while disenchanting those which you don’t need. This in turn allows you to buff your current gear up with powerful enchantments.

Herbalism/Alchemy- If you prefer making buffing potions on top of health and mana potions to keep yourself safe, this combination allows you to gather your own herbs to turn them into potions.

Mining/Jewelcrafting – This profession allows you to make your own jewellery as you level up while making the gems when you get to the higher levels. Mining simply provides you with the ores and gems to level jewelcrafting and could be replaced with something like tailoring or enchanting once your jewelcrafting is maxed out.

The Verdict

The priest gives you a versatile healer allowing you to deal with just about every situation. On the other hand if you wish to deal damage it also gives you a specialization to deal damage in a fashion not seen in any other class (although some might argue affliction warlocks are quite similar). All in all I’d have to say the main problem is that the priest is very awkward to level until you get to around 30-40. If you do manage to stick it out you will be very desired as both a healer and damage dealer.
