The Paladin mechanics
Seals – Seals are another mechanic unique to the paladin. There are many different seals which are self buffs. What they do is that whenever you hit in melee you have a certain chance to have a secondary effect. As such there are seals that have a chance to heal yourself and another one to restore your mana. On the other hand there are offensive seals which allow you to do your damage in different fashion. For example the seal of righteousness adds extra damage on every swing you make. As you immerse yourself in this mechanic you will quickly find that you have to be thoughtful in which seal you choose for every situation.

Auras – Auras are powerful buffs the paladin gains, and his allies if they are within his range, that can be toggled between. Auras vary from resistances to magic such as fire, frost and shadow to very specific auras such as an armor increasing aura and an aura that reduces the chance that you will be interrupted while you are casting spells. Another very popular aura is one that you get later on in the game which increases mounted speed by 20%!
Blessings – Blessings are casted buffs which last from 10 to 30 minutes with the 30 minute requiring a vendor bought reagent. These strong buffs vary from increasing attack power to restoring extra mana to the player. A talented blessing for the protection paladin gives them a buff that restores mana whenever they avoid an attack while slightly reducing damage taken. The last blessing is a popular buff which increases all stats of the buffed player by 10%. This buff is very powerful as it increases every aspect of your character and scales with the gear you have!
Holy Power - A newly cataclysm mechanic for paladins is holy power. Every talent specialisation has one core ability to generate this resource, and talents to randomly generate even more. Holy paladins can convert it into an instant heal, protection paladins can use it to mitigate damage, and lastly retribution paladins can use it to unleash a powerful single target attack.
The Paladin versatility
The last 2 paladin guides regarding their abilities and roles gives you an idea what they’re capable of. Make no mistake thinking that if you pick one role you’re absolute terrible at the other. Especially when you’re making your way to the max level a retribution paladin can easily use their heals to keep going while a paladin choosing the holy specialization can use the damaging seals to still kill relatively quickly with a near impossibility of dying. If you get a bit bored with a certain spec you also have the choice to play another role between a healer, tank or damage dealer by simply changing your gear and talents. This basically allows you to experience every aspect of the game while only leveling one class!
Choosing a profession
As with every class picking a profession is a very important part of your character progression. Since the Paladin class uses both melee weapons and mail (plate armor from level 40) a very solid choice is to go with mining and blacksmithing. This allows you to pick up your resources with mining while making your armor and weapons with blacksmithing. On the other hand another solid choice would be to pick up mining and skinning and sell your resources on the auction house and buy upgrades you like from the auction house instead of having to keep your blacksmithing close to your level (which can be quite tricky!).
Another option would be going Alchemy and Herbalism. This will allow you to gather your own herbs and turn them into a multitude of potions. Ranging from restoring your health and mana to giving your powerful buffs, there are also potions that give you nifty extras such as invisibility if you just don’t feel like killing those monsters blocking your way. The verdict
Between the heavy armor and ability to heal themselves the Paladins make a great class for a new player. This is shown by its huge popularity being one of the most played classes. Don’t make this put you off as this is easily offset by the massive versatility of paladins. Unlike some other classes if you have a group with 3 paladins it will work just fine as it gives you 3 different blessings and auras, while the paladins could decide which of them heals, deals damage or tanks.
While on your way to level 80 you get the option to specialize in being a pure damage dealer without losing your ability to heal yourself in clutch situations. This allows you to quickly burn through mobs with little risk of dying.
