Traps- From pets to traps, this mechanic allows you to trick your opponents into severe advantages. The hunter gets a multitude of traps to hinder their opponents: Explosive Trap – Any enemy target approaching the trap will trigger it causing every enemy in range to take a large amount of fire damage plus additional fire damage over time. Freezing Trap – The first enemy to trigger this trap will get frozen in place preventing any movement. Any damage taken will break this effect. Frost Trap – When this trap gets triggered any enemy within radius will get slowed until it leaves the radius. Immolation Trap – The enemy to trigger this trap will take a large amount of fire damage over time. Snake Trap – This trap will, when triggered, release a multitude of snakes which are all happily equipped with most of the rogue’s poisons. These include mind numbing (casting slow), deadly poison (stacking damage over time) and crippling poison (movement snare).

Tracking – As a hunter you get many abilities which allow you to track diverse monsters in world of Warcraft. These include humanoids, undead, elementals, giants, hidden, beasts and dragonkin. When you track one of these your minimap will show you when one of these creatures is in range through yellow circles.
Stings – The hunter gets a healthy amount of stings that hinder their opponents: Scorpid Sting – Reduces the chance for the target to hit with melee and ranged attacks by 3%. Serpent Sting – Deals nature damage over time to the target. Viper Sting – Drains 4% of the targets mana over 8 seconds restoring 300% of this to the hunter. Wyvern Sting – This survival talent puts a target to sleep for a short duration and when they wake up they will suffer from a powerful damage over time effect .
The Hunter Gimmicks Besides traps and pets the hunter gets some more cool abilities which I will elaborate below. Freezing Arrow – This ability allows you to cast your freezing traps from range instead of placing them under yourself. Kill Shot – This ability is usable on any target below 20% health. It’s a powerful shot which does a huge amount of damage allowing you to quickly finish of wounded targets. Master’s Call – This ability allows your pet to remove roots and movement impairing effects from itself and your current target while making them immune to it for 4 seconds. Misdirection – This allows you to redirect all threat you generate for the next 4 seconds to your desired target (this includes your pet). Deterrence – This ability allows you to deflect all spells and attacks made against you for 5 seconds. The Beast Within – This talent combined with Bestial Wrath makes you you deal 10% more damage for 10 seconds, your pet 50% for 10 seconds all the while making you immune to any effect that controls you characters such as movement impairing effects and stuns. Chimera Shot – This marksman talent deals 125% weapon damage and has different effects depending on the sting currently active on your target: Serpent Sting Instantly deals 40% of the damage done by your serpent sting as nature damage. Viper Sting Instantly restores mana equal to 60% of the mana drained by your viper sting. Scorpid Sting Attempts to disarm the target for 10 seconds. Explosive Shot – This final survival talent deals a powerful shot that deals direct fire damage to the target, and for each second for 2 seconds. Wyvern Sting – This survival talent puts your target to sleep giving you some time to go back to max range, or place your traps. Scatter Shot – This survival talent deals 50% weapon damage and disorients the target for 4 seconds. This once again allows you to position yourself from away from your target so you can shoot them safely to their grave.
Choosing your Professions
Many people prefer going a gathering/crafting combination that allows them to make themselves their armor. For hunters I’m not a big fan of this, mainly because they gain the ability to use a different type of armor later on and the profession doesn’t really compensate for this diversion. As such I suggest you stay away from skinning/leatherworking and try some of these. Mining/Skinning - This allows you to farm resources and sell them on the auction house. You could use the earned money to upgrade your ranged weapon which is the most important aspect of your gear. Mining/Engineering – This combination allows you to gather your own resources to level engineering which in turns gives you some guns you can craft in addition to being able to create your own ammunition for these weapons. Remember that in the long run the best ammunition is crafted through engineering and not vendor bought and as such you will lose a lot of damage if you don’t at least have an engineering buddy. Mining/Jewelcrafting – This allows you to level your jewelcrafting with mining and sell extra materials on the auction house. As you level your jewelcrafting you will be able to make yourself powerful jewellery to begin with, as these are usually hard to come by. Once you reach the higher levels you can also create gems to boost your gear.
The Verdict
The hunter is often see as the most newbie friendly class in the game. Once you hit level 10 your pet will be able to tank the mobs while you pump them full of arrows (or bullets). Because of this it is definitely a good first class choice. Not only this but you will be able to travel around the whole world to tame your favorite pets and to experiment with abilities. If you’re looking for a ranged class that isn’t a caster the hunter is a powerful class that will suit any kind of player.
