World of Warcraft Priest Guide

The priest brings the traditional vulnerable, yet powerful healer to World of Warcraft. It is considered the most versatile healer while still having the ability to specialize for powerful damage. If you like playing a healer that gets a lot of options for healing this might just be the class for you.

Getting Started

Click here to learn more about leveling fast NOWThe priest gets a reasonable amount of races to choose from. The Horde gets Blood Elves, Trolls and Undead whereas the Alliance can be Humans, Dwarves, Dranei and Night Elves. Unless you’re interested in player versus player your race isn’t important as a priest. I will still give you some suggestions if you do wish to engage in some Player versus Player. For the Horde Blood Elves get a silence while Undead gets the ability to break a charm/fear/sleep effect. Because of this you should favor them over trolls. For the Alliance humans get a racial ability that acts as a pvp trinket (removing any character root/stun/immobilizing effect). As such there is no argument as to what to pick for a player vs player character for the Alliance. On the other hand dwarves do get the ability to remove poisons and disease from them which can be pretty useful as well.
Another point I'd like to make is that you will be doing a lot of spellcasting as a priest. As such it is a good idea to research the spell animations for the races to make sure you don't dislike them as you will be seeing them a lot.

The second thing to decide is how you wish to level your priest. Being a healer you might want to heal some instances on your way to the end game to get some experience as a healer. Even though going the shadow specialization will allow you to level considerably faster both discipline and holy still gain a decent amount of damage talents to make your soloing more efficient.

The Priest Roles

The Priest has the option to be either a healer or a damage dealer. Unlike other healers it has the option to specialize in different ways of healing through 2 different talent trees dedicated to healing and only one to damage.

Holy – The holy tree focuses on direct healing through a multitude of spells. Between powerful single target heals or circle of healing to heal a group of players up holy has a solution for most healing problems.

Discipline – This tree is mainly focused on reducing damage taken through shields and a lesser sense buffs. Don’t make this worry you about not being able to heal people up. You also get penance which is a very powerful channeled heal which will quickly bring any target back to the safe zone

Shadow – For those wishing to level quickly, or simply play a damage dealer, priests have the option to specialize in being a shadow priest. As a shadow priest you will mostly focus on keeping your damage over time effects on the target while mixing in filler abilities such as direct nukes or a channeled nuke.

The Priest Gimmicks

The priest gets a lot of interesting abilities from leveling or through talents. I will sum all of them up here to give you an idea what you can expect from your priest.

Divine Hymn – This powerful heal will  heal the lowest targets in range for a massive amount every 2 second for 8 seconds while applying a 10% healing taken buff to any player healed.

Prayer of Mending – This fire and forget spell will heal your target when they take damage. Once the heal is done it’ll bounce to a new target in range until they take damage. It lasts 30 seconds after every bounce and can bounce up to 5 times.

Binding Heal – Not sure whether to heal somebody else or yourself? Guess what this spell does? It heals both you and your target.

Mass Dispel – A lot of nasty effects are removable with magic dispels in World of Warcraft. This ability allows you to remove 1 harmful effect from every ally, and 1 buff from every enemy within the radius of your cast. This is an exceptionally powerful spell as it also removes the Paladin’s Divine shield and the Mage’s Ice Block which only the warrior can remove. The good part about this is unlike the warrior’s ability, this has no cooldown and is area of effect instead of single target.

Shadowfiend – This spell, when cast on an enemy, will restore your mana depending on the damage the fiend does. Even though it is usually seen as a mana restoring tool you shouldn’t underestimate how much damage it actually does as it’s pure shadow damage.
