To get started we'll begin with an introduction to World of Warcraft.. 

World of Warcraft is thè most popular MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) out today. This is shown by the fact that it’s been running since its North American launch on November the 23th 2004 and has only been growing! 

When you immerse yourself in this world you are given the choice between 10 different classes. These classes alone will give you unique experiences as you make your way through the game. As such you could focus on close offensive combat with a sneaky rogue, a defiant warrior or perhaps the animal forms of the druid appeal more to you. If you prefer to support your allies by healing them there are multiple choices aswell with the holy power of the Paladin, the nature driven healing powers of the Druid and Shaman (don’t believe that means that they heal the same way!) or the jack of all trades, the priest. And these options are just the beginnings. Perhaps you prefer soaking up the punishment for your allies and going into the “Tank” role. Other people might prefer to stay in the back and pick up a bow with the Hunter class, or use powerful magics as a Mage.

Anyway back to my introduction to World of Warcraft, if you think that’s all there is in the world of Warcraft you are mistaken. As you journey through the world and complete so called “Quests” (it’s basically helping computer controlled characters) you will gain experience. Once you gain enough experience you will gain a level allowing you to go all the way to level 80 (In an upcoming expansion this will increase to 85!). An interesting twist to this is that starting from level 10 you will also gain talent points. This allows you to select extra abilities  in one of the three talent trees your class gets. For example, the Paladin gets a Holy Tree, Protection Tree and a Retribution Tree. Each tree focuses on improving a specific play style. For the Paladin this is respectively healing, tanking (soaking up damage from creeps) and DPS (Damage per second, simply doing more damage). If you were to spend your points in the Retribution trees you will be coming across talents that increase the damage of your melee abilities, increase their chance to critically strike (That is: Do double damage) or even gain brand new abilities to strengthen your character. All in all you can see that talent trees will allow you to greatly customize your character. 

Another important part in character progression is picking your profession. These come in two different categories. 

Primary Professions: Blacksmithing, Alchemy, Tailoring, Jewel crafting, Inscription, Mining, Skinning, Engineering, Enchanting, Leatherworking, Herbalism 

Secondary Professions: Cooking, Fishing, First Aid  

The difference between the two is that you can have only 2 out of 10 of the primary professions, whereas you can chose to pick up all the secondary professions. Because of this it is important to do some research into what your class needs and which professions combine the best to give you as many benefits as possible.
